Don’t expect Cleveland Orchestra-level musicianship at a Cleveland Pride Band concert. Do expect a raucous good time and camaraderie than embraces people of all types — diverse, equal and inclusive.
The group was founded back in 2003 and became regulars at LGBTQ+ events such as Pride under the name the Blazing River Freedom Band. The all-volunteer group, made up of LGBTQ+ musicians their allies, has had a post-pandemic growth spurt, with new musicians, higher profile venues and the new name it adopted in 2023.
Its next concert, taking place at the Maltz Performing Arts Center, is called “Everything’s Coming Up Broadway,” which pretty much tells you what you’ll here. Hit tunes from shows such as Wicked, West Side Story and The Lion King are on the menu, and you may be encouraged to sing along. In fact, after the show, you might be encouraged to join them! You still have that clarinet from high school, right?
