This week, the Akron Symphony showcases one of its own when its former principal clarinetist Amer Hasa takes the lead on Mozart’s 1791 Clarinet Concerto. The Palestinian-American Chicago native has had a busy career as an orchestra and chamber musician, joining the Akron Symphony in 2019 while finishing his Bachelor of Music at Oberlin Conservatory; he then earned his master’s degree at Yale where he’s currently a post-graduate teaching fellow.

The program will also include Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, the overture to Joseph Bologne’s 1780 comic opera The Anonymous Lover, and the song cycle Five Freedom Songs by 43-year-old composer Jessie Montgomery, who served as composer-in-residence at the Chicago Symphony from 2021-2024. They’ll be joined by soprano Sirgourney Cook (also a Chicago native) and the Akron Symphony Choir.

The concert takes place at E.J. Thomas Hall. Get tickets here.
