Rock Hall Screens Prince’s 1984 Hit Film “Purple Rain”

Thu 2/27 @ 7PM

The artist (formerly?) known as Prince was known for his grandiose self-mythologizing as well as for his ambitious and unmatched music. In his 1984 film Purple Rain, which he starred in and for which he wrote all the music, it interspersed riveting concert footage with a romantic story line. In it, the hero, a thinly veiled version of Prince himself, dubbed “The Kid,” struggles for recognition in the Minneapolis club scene, while dealing with abusive parents, musical competitors, and the attention of his girlfriend, aspiring singer Apollonia (played by Apollonia Kotero) whom his rival Morris Day (played by Morris Day) is trying to steal.

It was a hit, making back its costs 10 times over and winning the Oscar for Best Original Song Score. The hits “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy” and the title track came from the soundtrack album.

It’s the next film being screened at the Rock Hall’s Foster Theater as part of its latest film series. The guitar used by Prince during the Purple Rain tour is on display in the Rock Hall’s 1984 exhibit so you can check that out prior to the screening from 6-7pm.
