When the Cleveland Heights Democrats planned their “Resistance Fair, they told the participating groups to except a couple of hundred people. Despite the cold and snow on the day of the event, attendance estimates ran as high as 1,500. A half hour after start time the line wrapped around the building, and the sign-in table was inaccessible, so an actual count was impossible. It was almost too packed in the Heights High lunchroom to get near the tables.
About 50 groups participated — political organizations ranging from the Communist Party to the Cuyahoga Democratic Women’s Caucus and the Stonewall Democrats, good government groups such as the League of Women Voters and ACLU, groups promoting specific causes such as Moms Demand Action, Move to Amend and public schools advocates, social services groups offering help for foster kids aging out of the system and low-income pregnant women, and even Lake Erie Ink, which offers writing workshops and events mostly for kids. There was lots of candy!
