In early 2018, a quartet of well-known area jazz musicians came together, as jazz musicians do, and formed an ensemble they called Pulse to explore, they say, “melodic shape, harmonic subtlety, improvisation, and the wide-open soundscapes of the Midwest.” They wanted to reach a broad audience while reflecting the history of jazz quartet.
The players — bassist Aidan Plank, sax/reeds player Brad Wagner, keyboard player Anthony Fuoco and drummer Dustin May — have all had copious experience playing with area ensembles of all types and countless other musicians, as most topnotch jazz musician do.
That may be why it’s taken them six years of rehearsing and performing to record their self-titled debut album, featuring their original compositions. The album is available digitally here, and will be available on limited edition CD when they celebrate their album release show at — where else? — the BOP STOP this week.
