There’s something about the Peter Pan story that keeps captivating audiences, writers, producers, actors, and directors to tell the story in many forms and produce it on stages, in films and on TV.
Rick Elice’s Peter and the Starcatcher debuted in 2009 and ran for nine months on Broadway in 2012. It’s one of those “origin story” plays, along the lines of Wicked, that purports to tell “what came before” a well-known story. In this case it’s a prequel to the Peter Pan story all of us are familiar with. It tells how the titular character emerged from an unhappy orphaned background to become the perennial child who led others to Never Never Land. In it a dozen actors play more than 100 characters.
Cleveland’s Dobama Theatre mounted the play back in 2015 and 2016, and Blank Canvas followed in 2023. Now Great Lakes Theatre is producing it at its home at the Hanna Theatre in Playhouse Square, opening on February 7. It runs through Sunday March 2. Get tickets here.
