Cleveland has its big outdoor cold-weather festival Brite Winter (last weekend), as well as the Slovenian chase-away-the-winter festival Kurentovanje. Now Akron is getting in on the game, putting its own spin on it. This Saturday, March 1, it’s debuting its Frasnacht Karneval of Lights in the HUG Place, 133 Merriman Road.
The party will include a variety of entertainments including live music by such diverse ensembles as the St. Ed’s Trash Talkers ( a group of students playing percussion on refashioned trash cans), Polkamaniacs, Couple of Wanderers, Massive Hotdog Recall, Bryan Elijah Smith, A Band Named Ashes with King Locust and others; fire performers from Divine Harmony Entertainment, an open mic and jam session with the Highland Square; and the Brning of the Old Man Winter Effigy.
There’ll also be food trucks with hot food and warm beverages. Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes and masks.
