The Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, which provides opportunities for teen musicians from across northeast Ohio to work with contemporary composers and songwriters, is marking its 30th season with a concert called SymphoniCLE, which spotlights the accomplishments of its mission.
It will feature four commissioned pieces inspired by Cleveland, including 29-year-old Michigan-based composer Gala Flagello’s Everything Beautiful; and New Orleans-based 29-year-old composer Dylan Trần’s piece, 1000 Words, a creative collaboration with three CYO students — Audra Incledon, Alisdair Welty, and Maria Zarjetskiy. Both composers have previously collaborated with CYO. They’ll also play commissioned pieces by Katie O’Hare LaBrie and Nubia Jaime-Donjuan, and works by CYO music director Kris “Skinnyk” Morron and CYO percussionist Cameron Shelton.
The evening will also feature a performance by cellist Elisa Moulthrop, winner of CYO’s season 30 concerto competition. She’ll perform in early 20th-centruy Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz’s Cello Concerto No 1.
The concert takes place at the Maltz Performing Arts Center. Get tickets here.
