Try some Brazilian-style food at Batuqui.

Mon 3/3-Fri 3/14

It’s time once again to broaden your culinary horizons and help support the local restaurant scene. Yes, it’s Cleveland Restaurant “Week,” a 12-day opportunity to sample some of the eateries that are part of Cleveland Independents, a consortium of locally owned establishments. Each of the 30 or so participating locations will offer a three-course fixed-price dinner for around $40 (prices will vary). Menus are available at clevelandrestaurantweek.com.

Cleveland Independents reminds us of the challenges faced by independent, mostly locally owned, many chef-owned restaurants, especially since the pandemic and inflation causing food prices to skyrocket. Due to those situations, prices for the fixed-price menus varies based on the restaurant’s offerings and many now also offer the special for carry out.

They also share that “Cleveland Independents’ members have changed, too. While initially an organization of white tablecloth restaurants, today’s membership showcases a range of price points and cuisine.  Many members now feature ethnic foods, have fewer seats and are representative of an ever-evolving Northeast Ohio food scene.”

How varied is it? You can enjoy traditional Italian food at Bruno’s or Piccolo Italian and Mediterranean food at Astoria, or more exotic Brazilian food at Batuqui, a fancy steak dinner at Hyde Park Steakhouse or meat-and-dairy-free menu at Cleveland Vegan, white tablecloth at Cleveland institutions Pier W or Don’s Lighthouse or an informal, contemporary atmosphere at the vegetarian Root Café. Locations range from Rocky River to Chagrin Falls, Strongsville to Geneva, Lakewood to Twinsburg. You can even check out the brand new EDWINS location at the former Nighttown space (they’re still listing the former Shaker Square on the Cleveland Independents website — don’t go there!)
