Baldwin Wallace Opera Performs Work About Speed Dating

Fri 2/14 @ 7PM

Sat 2/15 @ 3PM & 7PM

Sun 2/16 @ 3PM

The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory Opera program heads down to the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium this weekend, to present four performances of the one-act opera called Speed Dating Tonight!

The 2013 comic opera by long-time opera conductor/composer Michael Ching focuses on the search for a perfect partner, centering around a series of “speed daters” whose five-minute dates make up the opera’s content, as a variety of characters reveal who they are to their new “date” and the audience. The score includes parodies of famous opera tunes. It’s become a popular performance piece because of its large cast of diverse voices and types, and because its structure allows significant leeway for changes to length, order, and types and numbers of performers required. So it’s easy to adjust it to provide roles for students in an opera program. And Ching has added two new “dates” for these performances, the opera’s Cleveland premiere.
