January is the big month for celebrating the life and music of Elvis Presley (although if you go to Las Vegas the “big month” is every month!) Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935, meaning he’d have turned 90 this year if he hadn’t died in 1977 at the age of 42, the result of years of unhealthy living.
But his music lives on in the person of countless Elvis impersonators and tribute acts, three of which will make up the Elvis Tribute Artist Spectacular Birthday Edition taking place at Playhouse Square’s State Theatre this weekend.
And while many of the tribute acts focus on his late, white jumpsuit nightclub-style performances which were heavy on schlock, set dialogue and passing out scarves to swooning audience members, this show will take you on a journey through Elvis’s career 25-year career starting with his rockabilly heyday that influenced the whole history of rock & roll, his army stint, his run of bad ’60s movies, his 1968 comeback special just when everyone had written him off, and finally the white jumpsuit period.
Performers include Shawn Klush, Cody Ray Slaughter and Ryan Pelton, with special guests the Stamps featuring Ed Enoch and Trent Smith.
