I read and re-read the release about Ray Caspio’s THE BUCKTOOTHED F△GG⊙T (or THE NIJINSKY INCANTATION), described as “an exciting installation, performance, and interactive art experience, which overwhelms the senses in the best way,” and I’m still not quite sure what to say about it.
But here’s what the artist says:
“There was a death here. Welcome to the unconscious of a human animal whose existence is a threat. A shapeshifter whose madness is so honest and immersive, you feel their soul. He’s for they/them. And you. THE BUCKTOOTHED F△GG⊙T (or THE NIJINSKY INCANTATION) is an act of Solve et Coagula: dissolving something to rebuild it to an integrated whole. In the case of this interactive art exhibit, identity and the society from which it emerged.”
Caspio goes on to say that the piece emerged from things recorded on the wall of their studio during the pandemic lockdown” “Undoing, unraveling, shedding the veneer, the cocoon, built around all that they are. A transmutation of sexuality. An autobiography in dream. A communal incantation brought to life through homoerotic paintings, text, audio, video, photography, and what the space inspires you to leave behind.”
I guess you’ll just have to go to find out what that all means. Caspio’s piece will be performed Thu 1/23-Sat 1/25 as part of Cleveland Public Theatre’s Soft Launch program. But they’re also doing a series of free performances taking place at CPT’s East storefront Sun 1/19-Tue/21.
