Street musician Eli Fletcher, born Kevin Thornhill, was a familiar sight at events around greater Cleveland with his red-and-blue superhero ensemble and long blond hair, toting his guitar and performing impromptu songs often made up on the spot. Alas, we won’t be seeing him anymore at events such as the St. Patrick’s Day parade or hanging out at Edgewater Park. He passed away December 14 at the age of 64.
In his “real life” he worked behind the scenes for theater and special events. He also released five albums on Job Machine Records, including 2021’s Heads or Tales, released in conjunction with his write-in campaign for mayor of Cleveland. He was not able to beat Justin Bibb.
Brenda Warren and Geri Rose Giacci will be hosting a Celebration of Life for Fletcher in Ohio City on Tuesday January 28, which would’ve been his 65th birthday. It culminates in a gathering at 5pm at Great Lakes Brewing Company’s Cleveland Rocks at 2516 Market Avenue, but the celebration will go on all afternoon, starting at with a bar crawl on East 4th Street meeting at the House of Blues at 2pm, then gathering at Ohio City Burrito at 3:30 and arriving at Great Lakes Brewing between 4 and 4:30 where they’ll unveil a special beer brewed in his honor. Music starts at 5 and continues until 11. Anyone wishing to perform should call 440-654-7000 and leave a message.
All are welcome; Celebrants are encouraged to wear their own superhero costumes.
