Fri 1/31-Sun 2/16
If you missed Blank Canvas Theatre’s production the 1982 musical Little Shop of Horrors last fall, good news: Near West Theatre, mere blocks from Blank Canvas, is mounting its version this month.
The show’s macabre humor with its story line about a florist who raises a flesh-eating plant intent on world domination and its screwball love story has enduring appeal, as does its score, which includes songs that draw on rock & roll and Motown. Some, like “Suddenly Seymour” and “Somewhere That’s Green,” have become classics. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman are no slouches; both are known for their work on blockbuster Disney musicals such as Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. But Little Shop of Horrors remains their offbeat, oft-performed little treasure.
The show runs weekends through Sunday February 16, Fridays and Saturday at 7:30 and Sundays @ 2pm. Get tickets here.
