Cleveland’s Mourning [A] BLKStar Celebrates 10th Anniversary at Grog Shop

Fri 1/31 @ 8:30PM

Cleveland’s Mourning [A] BLKstar describes itself as “a multi-generational, gender and genre non-conforming amalgam of Black Culture dedicated to servicing the stories and songs of the apocalyptic diaspora.”

Founded in 2015 by writer/activist/musician R.A. Washington, the group has grown from a quartet to an octet, expanding its sonic range, which draws on soul, jazz, blues, electronic music and spoken word to create a nuanced view of Black life in America today and its history. Unique in the local music scene, the group was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize for music in 2021. It features James Longs and LaToya Kent on vocals, Washington on samplers and bass, Pete Saudek on guitar and keyboards, Jah Nada on bass/guitar, Theresa May on trumpet and Dante Foley on drums.

The band will be headlining a concert at the Grog Shop to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The lineup also include Christa Ebert aka Uno Lady who creates her music by processing and layering her voice with effects pedals; darkwave artist Nature Nvoke; and “cyber hip hop” artist Messiah in Glytch.
