Italian cellist Antonio Janigro (1918-1989) was born, grew up and got his early music training in Milan before heading to Paris for further musical study. He was on vacation in Yugoslavia when World War II broke out and he was stranded in Zagreb, where he taught at the conservatory until the war ended. Following the war he travelled extensively throughout the world, performing and teaching, while continuing his teaching in Zagreb and founding the internationally acclaimed Zagreb Soloists in 1953.
His son, Dr. Damir Janigro, who lives in Cleveland Heights, has write a book about his father’s life, titled A Gentleman of the Cello, which draws on memories from his friends, colleagues, students and two children. To celebrate the release, Dr. Janigro will be doing a presentation at the Judson Park Auditorium which will feature film and recordings along with his own stories.
