The Jesus Lizard Brings Back the 90s Glory Days of the Underground Music Scene

Sun 12/8 @ 8PM

Few bands epitomized the noisy underground rock scene of the 90s as perfectly as The Jesus Lizard did. Formed in Texas in 1987, but soon working out of Chicago, a mecca for this scene, they charged through the 90s blowing up venues with their aggressive, take-no-prisoners music and lead vocalist David Yow’s reckless onstage style. Whether performing at Blossom at Lollapalooza 1995 or packing the Euclid Tavern for three nights over Labor Day weekend that same year — competing, it might be noted, with the opening concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the old Lakefront Stadium — they were kings of one of the most dynamic, creative and thriving indie rock scenes ever.

Appropriately they called it quits just as the decade was coming to an end, then reunited briefly a decade late, and again in 2017— and this time it stuck. Astonishingly, this isn’t Yow and “some guys he picked up somewhere” — it’s the same lineup that propelled them through their most productive years: guitarist Duane Denison, bassist David Wm. Sims and drummer Mac McNeilly.

When they return to town to perform at the Agora this weekend, they’ll be joined by another voice from the ’90s noisy rock underground: Northeast Ohio’s Disengage who were regulars on such bills at the Euclid Tavern and the Grog Shop, blasting out their thick, heavy sound until the mid 00s.

Get tickets here. Bring earplugs. Everyone at the Euc in the 90s did.
