Kora player Seckou Keita was just 21 when he arrived in the UK from his native Senegal in 1999. That became his base for a career as one of the world’s preeminent players of the 12-string plucked West African instrument, sometimes called “the Hendrix of the kora.” He’s known for his unusual tunings and his wide musical range. He’s used his instrument in classical, jazz, pop, folk and global music contexts, performing with artists such as rock musician Damon Albarn (Blur), Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, Welsh harp player Catrin Finch, and classical ensembles such as Orchestra National de Bretagne, and appeared on festivals all over the world. His most recent album African Rhapsodies is a work for kora and orchestra recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra.
When he comes to northeast Ohio he’ll be performing at Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel as part of its 2024-2025 Artist Recital Series. Go here for tickets.
