Don’t let winter keep you indoors — fresh air is good for you all year round!
Luckily, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History offers regular opportunities to join a group of the adventurous and curious to explore various areas of the region, accompanied by a naturalist who will share the stories of the area you’re hiking through.
Its next natural areas field trip will explore a new addition to CMNH’s properties — the Weaver tract at South Geneva Swamp. It’s the last big stretch of Lake Erie swamp forest between Cleveland and the Pennsylvania border, containing sand ridges and dry knolls as well as swamp forest. There you can get a feel for what the region was like 300 years ago, and learn about the species that make their homes there.
The Weaver tract had been scheduled to be timbered before CMNH took it on and protect this bit of our natural history. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes; don’t forget your camera, binoculars and water. It’s a moderate to difficult hike so be prepared for some trekking.
