Homeless for the Holidays: Drumplay Benefit Doubles as CD Release party

Sat 12/14 @ 7PM

The world/jazz drum ensemble Drumplay’s show on Saturday, December 14, not only acts a fundraiser for Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless, but will also double as their new CD release party.
Drumplay, has been performing for over thirty years with a Who’s Who of the area’s finest musicians.  In a rotating collective, Drumplay creates “rhythmprovisations”, their word for spontaneous creativity.  No two gigs are alike.  Fusing elements of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Middle Eastern motifs with a jazz sensibility, the band has released more than ten albums including being featured on numerous compilations.  Some of their work features the poetry of the late Daniel Thompson, Cuyahoga County’s First Poet Laureate, whose words speak to the human condition on issues of homelessness and social justice.
Founder James Onysko is doubly psyched about how things are tuning out. He’s actually performing per his doctor’s wishes.  “My doctor saw us perform this summer at a winery near our restaurant; and we blew him away.  He wrote me such a nice email about being proud of me in light of what I had to go through, etc.  It’s a long story.”
The concert will feature a stellar lineup with maybe some special guests.
Rick Kodramaz, electric bass
Al Moses, guitar + guitar synth
James Onysko, misc. percussion + conch shells (and maybe marimba?)
John Stebal, drums
The new CD is entitled Live @ Festival International de Musique Universitaire 2012 from a sound board recording that was discovered earlier this year.  James Onysko happens to be the USA Correspondent to  FIMU, and Drumplay has performed overseas numerous times.
