New Long Road, which debuted in the last year, features some veterans of the area music scene, reviving a concept they did about 15 years ago, but freshened up with some new members and new tunes. Their repertoire centers tunes that reach back into the ’60s folk revival when young people were rediscovering genres such as blues, bluegrass, traditional folk and other indigenous American musical forms, with some psychedelic rock, rockabilly, pop and jazz mixed in. Guitarist/vocalist David Budin is the group’s catalyst; he’s joined by Celtic harpist/guitarist/vocalist/banjo player Celia Hollander, who was in the previous version, plus three new recruits: vocalist Robin Stratton; cellists Julie Myers King; and flutist Linda White.
This week you can enjoy selections from their vast repertoire — some familiar and some not — while enjoying cookies at their first annual concert and cookie exchange at the Treelawn Social Club in the Waterloo Arts District. It’s a belated celebration of National Cookie Day, December 4. They’ll have lots of free homemade cookies on hand for concert goers to eat and take home. As an additional treat, they’re promising to play several songs they haven’t done at previous gigs as well.
