Cleveland Ballet Brings Its Refreshed Nutcracker to Playhouse Square

Fri 12/13-Sun 12/15

Thu 12/19-Sun 12/22

’Tis the season, and among other inevitabilities of the season is the return of The Nutcracker, usually in several different versions. But it’s the Cleveland Ballet’s version that has all the snowflake-y glitz and romance that the little girls in velvet dresses and patent leather shoes love, as they dream of some day dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy role themselves.

This year, the Cleveland Ballet has a brand-new version, with new sets, costumes and choreography, that draws on the traditional story with young Clara, seen in the first act in the party scene receiving a Nutcracker for a gift that turns into a prince, journeying in Act II to the Land of Sweets with the Prince to observe a series of colorful dances. What’s not brand new is the beloved Tchaikovsky music most little aspiring ballerinas can hum by heart.

The Nutcracker will be performed at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace Theatre for eight performances over two weekends. There will also be special events at performances including photos in the lobby with some of the dancers at the December 14, 15, 21 and 22 matinees, the Singing Angels performing in the lobby prior to the December 20 evening performance and the Cleveland Grays in the lobby at all performances.
