Brass chamber ensembles aren’t that rare now, but when the Canadian Brass was founded in 1970 they weren’t very common. And the group brought a theatrical flair to their concerts, valuing entertainment alongside musical skill, interacting with the audience, and flavoring challenging classical pieces with popular tunes including Dixieland, patriotic songs, Broadway hits, jazz standards and more. They’ve recorded almost 150 albums, done countless TV appearances and toured virtually every corner of the world.
The ensemble’s holiday shows are eagerly lapped up by audiences everywhere, and this year’s Making Spirits Bright, which comes to Severance Music Center this week, should be no different. The show should be a parade of familiar and beloved holiday tunes such as the nostalgic “Silver Bells,” the lively “Jingle Bell Rock” and the sentimental “I’ll Be Home for Christmas, along with “Songs of Hanukkah,” a nod to the other winter holiday which starts on Christmas Day this year.
