When John Lennon was shot and killed in New York City in 1980 at the age of 40, just as he was beginning a comeback from a long musical exile, it shocked fans and the world — nothing like that had happened in pop music before. On that Monday night we were at the Agora for the Stiff Records tour. As we sat in the club office in shock, a local record company promotion guy moseyed in and asked for the score of the football game. What football game?

The next day, local fans gathered downtown on what’s now called Perk Plaza (then Chester Commons) for a candlelight vigil.

This year, fans have the chance to gather at the Beachland Ballroom where it’s sure to be warmer for John Lennon Remembered, a benefit for Cleveland Rocks: Past Present Future, which provides services and assistance to help area bands grow their careers.

At the primarily seated show, a roster of area musicians will perform music by Lennon. Among the players scheduled to appear are folksinger Alex Bevan, fingerstyle guitarist Brian Henke, Nick Blasius & Lori Rizzo, Robin Stratton, Mark Teifenbach, Sato (Sheila Das, John McGrail and Jodi Dobos), the Sideman (Allen Littman, Theo Marks, Mike Pereira and Andrew Rothman), the George Martins(Mike Miller, Mike Lyford, Tony Bunce, David Mc Henry and Jason Weiner), and the 2024 Jam Band (Andrew Ulle, Colette Gschwind, Nick Blasius, Lori Rizzo, Norm Isaac, Marc Stauffer, Kendall Stauffer and Andrew Rothman).
