It’s that time again. To end 2024, Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque Orchestra, rolls out the most beloved of classic music Christmas staples: George Frideric Handel’s 1741 oratorio Messiah. Only a small part of it is about Jesus’ birth — much of it focuses on the Easter story of Christ’s passion, death and ascension. And the beloved Hallelujah chorus has nothing to do with Christmas either. But sometime in the early 20th century, performances began to happen at Christmas instead of Easter. Why argue with success? People just love it.

The orchestra and chorus will be joined for the two-hour-plus concert by soprano soloists are Sonya Headlam and Erica Schuller; mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz; tenor Jacob Perry; and baritones Edward Vogel and Charles Wesley Evans. AF’s artistic director Jeannette Sorrell conducts.

They’ll perform at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Akron Tuesday December 9; St Raphael in Bay Village on Thursday December 12; and at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland on Friday December 13 and Saturday December 14. There will be a afterglow social following the Friday December 13 concert.
