James Garfield, born in what’s now Moreland Hills in 1831, Ohio, was the U.S.’s 20th president, one of seven from Ohio, the most of any state (I predict within two years we’ll have an 8th: JD Vance). He was sworn into office in March 1881, but never had a chance to make his mark for better or worse. On July 2, he was shot in an assassination attempt. Primitive medical treatment, including lack of sterilization techniques that would’ve saved his life today, likely led to his death from infection on September 19. He and his wife are buried at the imposed Garfield Memorial at Cleveland’s Lake View Cemetery.
Ohio has made November 19, Garfield’s birthday, a holiday, and Lake View Cemetery is marking the day with a wreath laying, featuring special guests from the Garfield family and the military. It takes place at the Garfield Memorial. It’s free and open to the public.
