Ten years ago, Nicole McGee launched the Upcycle Parts Shop on St. Clair Avenue, based on a concept she’d already been promoting: recycling waste materials into art. The shop accepts donations of things such as yarn, fabrics, plastic containers, old maps and postcards, broken jewelry and more, that it sells for use in art and craft projects. It also hosts “craft bars” where people can come and stretch their imaginations as to what can be done with stuff that would have been thrown out. It claims to have diverted 55 tons of materials from landfills in the past decade.
McGee is now turning over the reins to her staff (she’s hinting a something else in the offing) but before she goes, the shop is hosting a tenth anniversary “Mystic Masquerade” party to look forward to the next decade. The event, taking place at Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries, will honor McGee and what she’s accomplished. Join them for food, dancing, creativity and more. Get tickets here.
