Two Shows Blending Humor and Art Open at Artists Archives of the Western Reserve

Work by Ralph Bacon

Thu 11/14 @ 5:30-8PM

Any Clevelander who follows the visual arts scene knows the work of George Kocar, whose witty drawings, illustrations and paintings have amused art lovers in the area for decades. His work has been in more than solo and group shows all over the world, and you can follow his delightful daily drawings of local cats and dogs on Facebook.

Now Artists Archives of the Western Reserve is hosting a double hit of Kocar: as star of an exhibit titled George Kocar — A Retrospective, and as curator of Funny Stuff, a show of humorous work by 32 area artists. It’s a who’s who of local artists, including a bunch of well-known names, working in different mediums (painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and more) and styles ranging from the delicate to the macabre, light-hearted to pointed social commentary. Artists in the show include Ralph Bacon, Debra Banyas, Annie Becker, Melissa Bollen, Justin Brennan, Gail Crum, Donna Coleman, Gary Dumm, Laura Dumm, Steve Ehret, PJ Halliwill, Laurel Herbold, Ron Hill, Leslie Edwards Humez, Nina Vivian Huryn, Victor Melaragno, Marvin Jones, Scott Kraynak, Billy the Robot (McKay), Angela Oster, Scott Pickering, Ed Raffel, Eric Rippert, Pat Sandy, Gerry Shamray, Mark Soppeland, Terry Speer, Gail Trunick, Gwen Waight, Justin Will, Will Wilson and Chuck Wimmer.

Kocar became an Archived Artist in 2019 and is celebrating his first solo show as an archived artist. The opening reception for both shows on Thursday November 14 is free and open to all.
