Kent’s Numbers Band aka 15-60-75, which debuted in the summer of 1970, is one of northeast Ohio’s musical treasures. Fronted by intense, charismatic singer/songwriter/guitarist Robert Kidney, the band developed its own distinctive sound out of rock and roll, blues and jazz, playing mostly original music. The last time I saw them someone in the audience thought they heard some Devo influence, but it would’ve been the other way around: the members of Devo were likely in the audience catching the Numbers Band’s sets in little Kent dives — where they still play.
Obviously, there have been many personnel changes in a band with such a long history, but Bob’s multi-instrumentalist brother jack Kidney and sax/keyboard player Terry Hynde have been along for most of the ride. The current band also features two more local music scene veterans: bassist Bill Watson and drummer Clint Alguire.
They’ve got some regular venues where they perform, one of which is Jilly’s Music Room in Akron’s Northside neighborhood. This weekend, they’ll be celebrating their 11th anniversary there. Come enjoy a drink, a bite from Jilly’s menu and a true northeast Ohio music legend.
