Cuerteto Casals was formed in 1997 in Madrid by students at the Rena Sofia School of Music there. Winning prizes in a couple of competitions in the early ’00s brought them international prominence, launching them on a career of touring and recording. Now based in Barcelona at the Catalonia School of Music where they teach, the group’s repertoire includes both time-tested classical pieces and newly commissioned works.
Once again, they’re back in Cleveland under the auspices of the Cleveland Chamber Music Society to perform at the Cultural Center at Disciples Christian Church, where they’ll play Mozart’s String Quartet in D Major K.4 99, contemporary Russia composer Sofia Gubaidulina’s Reflections on the Theme B-A-C-H, and Johannes Brahms’ String Quartet in C minor, Op. 51, No. 1.
