The nonprofit Cleveland Rocks: Past Present Future was founded by Beachland Ballroom co-owner Cindy Barber to provide career-building assistance to local musicians, to expand the area music scene and preserve music history.
While it’s true that the local music scene provides far more economic benefits to the local community than a football team (it’s true!) there’s no half billion dollars in taxpayer money being discussed to support area bands. So CRPPF has to do its own fundraising.
Its biggest annual benefit, Rock Solid, takes place this weekend at the Treelawn in the Waterloo Arts District. It kicks off with a cocktail hour with light snacks from 6-7pm, with the event kicking into gear at 7. It includes a pub-style dinner, speeches from music community leaders, and performances by bands representing different eras of northeast Ohio music: the Numbers Band, who’ve been together since 1970, playing their unique mix of jazz, blues and rock; Mourning [A] BLKstar, founded just under a decade ago by musician/writer/poet R.A. Washington to offer a distinctive perspective on Black music; and LoConti, a young classic rock-influenced band that just hit the scene a couple of years ago and are already tearing things up.
