Pianist Simone Dinnerstein, a New York native, got off to both an early and late start in the field of classical music, where most star performers were prodigies. She studied at the Manhattan School of Music as a teenager, then dropped out of Juilliard where she eventually returned. Not much went on with her career until she was in her mid 30s, when she self-financed a recording of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations which was released through Cleveland-based Telarc Records. The 2007 release rocketed to #1 on Billboard’s classical music chart and appeared on numerous 2007 “best of” lists.
That opened the door to numerous opportunities for the now-52-year-old musician. She signed to Sony Music and released a dozen additional albums. She has performed with orchestras and done solo concerts all over the world. She’ll be performing a solo concert in Akron under the sponsorship of the Tuesday Musical Association where she is its Margaret Baxtresser Pianist this season.
Among the pieces she’s perform in a Baroque-themed program at EJ Thomas Hall in Akron are Bach’s 15 Sinfonias, Jean-Phillippe Rameau’s Gavotte, Phillip Lasser’s 12 Variations on a Chorale by J.S. Bach, and Keith Jarrett’s Encore from Tokyo.
Dinnerstein’s Baroque and Baroque-inspired program will span Phillip Lasser’s 12 Variations on a Chorale by J.S. Bach to Keith Jarrett’s Encore from Tokyo. She will also perform Jean-Phillippe Rameau’s Gavotte and Bach’s own 15 Sinfonias, which the composer wrote for the musical education of his son Wilhelm Friedrich to develop dexterity and stimulate the imagination by showing different ways that musical ideas can be treated.
