In addition to presenting their own concerts, Cleveland’s No Exit New Music acts as a concert promoter, bringing in out-of-town ensembles with similar mindset and programming.
This week, that’s the New York City-based Meridian Arts Ensemble, a quintet of brass players founded in 1987 who have premiered over 50 newly commissioned pieces. They’ve moved away from traditional classical music in traditional venues to focus on modern American music including the work of Frank Zappa, incorporating both old and new music in eye-opening blend.
When they perform in Cleveland, they’ll be performing pieces by Daniel Grabois, Moshe Shulman, George Lewis, David Sanford and Franz Joseph Haydn, all of them living composers except Haydn, and all the compositions were written post-2009, except Haydn’s 1780 Feldpartie.
They’ll perform at Trinity Cathedral on Thursday November 7, at the BOP STOP on Friday November 8, and at Baldwin Wallace University’s Kulas Hall on Saturday November 9. As always the concerts are free and open to all.
