Near West Theatre’s Holiday Production, Scrooge The Musical, Opens

Fri 11/22-Sun 12/8

The stage version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has been a holiday staple at theaters of all types since, well, forever. My grade school did it every year, performed by eighth graders. Cleveland’s Great Lakes Theater has been doing it each year for centuries. OK, decades. Chances are, in any city of decent size, you’ll find half a dozen opportunities to catch some version of it.

One of those versions will be going up this weekend on the stage at Near West Theatre. The 1992 stage musical Scrooge! The Musical was adapted from the 1979 musical film Scrooge starring Albert Finney by Leslie Bricusse, best known for co-writing the musicals Stop the World—I Want to Get Off and The Roar of the Greasepaint—The Smell of the Crowd, with Anthony Newley. Bricusse wrote the book, score and lyrics for the stage version, with music of the music carried over from the film for which he earned an Oscar nomination. It’s the familiar story, but with songs added.

The Near West Theatre production, the first seasonal production out of the gate of many to come, will run Thursday through Sunday through December 8. Get tickets here.
