TubaChristmas isn’t about virtuoso musicians and professional-level performance. It’s about community, fun and holiday spirit.
The event, which is staged around the country, was founded 50 years ago at Indiana University, and since then, it’s expanded across the country and the world, with more than 200 events planned for this year including in Canada, Australia and Costa Rica. In each market, tuba and euphonium players of all levels of skill and experience are invited to take part in this holiday celebration. Anyone can sign up.
This week it’s returning to Cleveland where it’s taken place since 1997, to First Baptist Church. More than 50 tuba and euphonium players will gather, with Robert “Bo” Violette conducting and TubaChristmas Akron coordinator and University of Akron professor of music emeritus Tucker Jolly guest conducting.
To set it apart from the other TubaChristmases, this one also features percussionists, an antiphonal ensemble, and instrumental and vocal soloists, as well as more challenging music than the typical TubaChristmas. But there’ll still be plenty of familiar carols for the audience to sing along with. It’s free to attend; no reservation is necessary.
