There’s a new show about to go on view at the Crawford-Auto Aviation Museum at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Wild Horses: 60 Years of Ford’s Mustang celebrates the 60th anniversary of the introduction of this car which some people apparently feel a lot of affection for. (Mine dropped its transmission in the middle of Pennsylvania, less than 1,000 miles out of warranty, and I swapped it for a Honda.)
“The Mustang was an immediate hit when it was introduced in April of 1964 as a 1964-1/2 model,” they tell us. “Enthusiasts embraced the car’s rear-wheel drive, relatively light weight, seating for four, and the availability of four different engines and three different transmissions in a coupe or convertible.” The sales projections for that first year were 250,00 but they sold almost 700,000 in 18 months. Ten million Mustangs have been sold compared to almost half as many Chevy Camaros. (I bought two.) The car also appeared in movies such as Gone in 60 Seconds and Bullitt.
Twenty cars will be on display in this show, curated by Larry David, the Crawford’s collections manager. Cars were loaned by members of the Mustang Club of America.
The show opens on November 14 and runs through May 4, 2025. Get more information here.
