Cleveland’s Morgan Conservatory boasts the largest kozo (Japanese mulberry) grove in the U.S. Its bark is widely used by the Japanese in papermaking, and that’s what the Morgan uses it for too.

But the branches need to be harvested and the bark needs to be stripped from the branches to be processed for papermaking. Those tasks take place on a weekend in early November, and the Morgan invites the public to its annual kozo harvest to help out and learn more about the papermaking process from the very beginning. You don’t need any experience; they’ll tell you what to do and provide all the necessary tools. Be sure to wear work clothes! Last time I went they had someone demonstrating how the paper is made so you might get to see that too. The event takes place outdoors behind the Morgan next to the grove.
