Cleveland Orchestra Program Features Sibelius Symphony and Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto

Thu 11/21 @ 7:30PM

Fri 11/22 @ 7:30PM

Sat 11/23 @ 8PM

The Cleveland Orchestra tells us that Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s 1899 Violin Concerto, which is featured in its three concerts this weekend, was initially considered “long and pretentious,” an inauspicious debut. Since then it’s become a staple on orchestra programs so apparently subsequent audiences disagreed. Returning to join the orchestra as the piece’s soloist is American violinist Stefan Jackiw.

Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ “brooding and expansive” Symphony No. 1 headlines the program, with Carl Nielsen’s lively Maskarade overture opening to provide balance. Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali will be making his Cleveland debut on the podium.

One hour prior to the concert there’ll be a concert preview conversation with Jackiw in Reinberger Hall. Get tickets here.
