British R&B/soul/jazz vocalist Amy Winehouse died in 2011 at the age of 27, succumbing to her many years of substance abuse. She released her debut album Frank in 2003 to critical acclaim, but it was 2006’s Back to Black that shot her to stardom with tunes like “You Know I’m No Good” and the sadly revealing “Rehab” about her resistance to going to rehab. Unfortunately, other than scattered singles and live recordings, that’s the extent of her discography: two studio albums. Substance abuse and myriad relationship issues didn’t prove fuel for her productivity.
Her distinctive talent however has outlived her, influencing other artists and making her slim catalogue of songs much cherished by fans. That devotion is what’s behind the show back to BACK TO BLACK: the AMY WINEHOUSE celebration, coming to the Beachland Ballroom this week. It features a 12-piece band with a horn section and multiple vocalists that plays Back to Black in its entirely, along with other selections from her repertoire.
But there’s more! The concert also features jazzy/R&B-influenced seven-piece Cleveland band fronted by powerhouse female vocalist Danna O’Connor, and the ubiquitous Mikey Silas, the charismatic front man for Cleveland’s Apostle Jones.
