New SPACES Show Creates a “Living Archive” of NE Ohio’s LGBTQ+ Community

Fri 10/25 @ 6-9PM

California artist/educator/activist Julie Tolentino has joined with SPACES and the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland to create an installation called Crystalscape: An Archive of Relation that, we’re told, “serves as a living archive of intergenerational queer life in Cleveland.”

Part of the project is called “NIGHT LAB” which shares information about the collaboration between the artist and members of the local community: “the creation of crystal structures built from minerals, salts, and hair collected by participant’s communities.”

The show’s statement tells us that, “Hair in this project offers a tangible foundation for crystallization and the contemplation of change — including that which is both lost and found in our thriving over the passage of time. The Lab offers traces of not only the sculptural process/progress, but a durational imprint of group breathwork, dialogue, and movement experimentation across generations, spaces, backgrounds, and futures. As the crystals grow, both individually and together, they illuminate unfurling relationships before, during, and after this exhibition.”

The opening event on October 25 will feature a DJ set by Navy Jade. It’s free and open to all. The show will be on view through December 31.
