Mean Mary Brings Her Lived-In Folk/Country Songs to Riverdog Barn

Thu 10/17 @ 7:30PM

“Mean Mary” James is a musician with quite a past. Born in Alabama, her family moved all over the country when she was growing up, enduring some hard times but bonding over playing guitar and listening to classic country tunes by the likes of Hank Jr and Dolly Parton. Mary eventually became proficient on guitar, banjo, fiddle and vocals, and began performing when she was only 7 or 8, often with her brother Frank. When she was 22, she was derailed by a serious car accident that severely damaged her vocal chords, but as she recovered she continued to perform as an instrumentalist on 11 instruments (often still with her brother), co-wrote books with her mother and hosted a Nashville TV show about a musician’s life on the road. Eventually she regained her ability to sing.

The now-44-year-old musician recorded 18 albums including her newly released Woman Creature: Portrait of a Woman, Part 2, showcasing her personalized blend of folk, country and American roots music.

Mean Mary will be performing at Riverdog Barn as one of its final two outdoor shows of its season, which closes with the Stillhouse Junkies on Saturday October 19.
