There’s been a lot of conversation lately about making better use of our lakefront: making it more accessible to more people for more types of recreation.

For years, much actual development was primarily been on the west side, and fancy plans have been floated for the downtown lakefront by the football stadium. Recent years have seen upgrades at East 55th Street and the expansion of the east side bike path. Finally we’re hearing talk about development east of East 55th Street in Gordon Park, which was torn in two by the Shoreway many decades ago, making the lakefront inaccessible to east siders. (Old photos of the area that’s now the 72nd Street Fishing area, where giant boulders block off the lakefront, offer an enticing view of a beach with amenities of all types!)

If you’d like to know more about the plans being floated, there’s a community meeting to share the feedback that’s been gathered from citizens, organizations and stakeholders. The project team will be presenting three conceptual designs incorporating this feedback to get still more input from the community.

The meeting takes place at Horizon Science Academy, 6000 S. Marginal Road, on Wednesday October 16 @ 6-7:30pm. Doors open at 5:30. The meeting is open to all.
