It’s now the 29th anniversary for Cleveland Public Theatre is hosting its all-day Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival at its Gordon Square campus and the adjoining neighborhood

Once again the festival’s artistic director Héctor Castellanos Lara has put together an event that blends arts, performance, entrepreneurship, celebration and reverence in keeping with the festival’s Mexican roots as a day to honor beloved people who have passed on.

Parish Hall is filled with music and performances all day, while the Church at CPT building contains beautiful and lavish ofrendas — altars commemorating dead friends and relatives. A “cemetery” outside behind the church is filled with more altars honoring the dead, even fondly remembered pets.  Food and craft vendors fill the parking lot outside, offering a taste of Latin arts and culture.

The main event is the Skulls & Skeletons parade, stepping off at 3:30pm from the CPT parking lot. The revelers — community members and representatives from organizations and arts groups — parade and dance in their lavish costumes, masks and props down Detroit Avenue to the Craciun Berry Funeral Home where more displays honor the deceased.

The event is free, and even many of those on the sidelines watching the parade come dressed or the occasion. Get more information here.
