It will be ten years on November 22 since that awful day in Cleveland when 12-year-old Tamir Race was gunned down at Cudell Park by police who rolled up on him and fired without warning, later claiming they felt threatened by his toy gun.
Since then, his grieving mother, Samaria Rice, has been using his death to try to make a better life and a safer community for other kids (as well as battling police departments who seem to think hiring the officer who fired the shot is a good idea, even though investigation showed he probably never should have been hired in Cleveland). She’s created the Tamir Rice Foundation which is working to build the Tamir Rice Afro-Centric Cultural Center to provide free after-school programing in the arts, civic participation and other areas.
This weekend the Tamir Rice Foundation will be hosting an event to commemorate Tamir’s life and raise money to complete the center. Attendees are promised “an evening of inspiring speeches reinforcing our dedication to creating a safer and more equitable world, particularly for young community members,” as well as spoken word and musical performances, and a buffet supper.
Go here for tickets or to make a donation. It takes place at Gordon Green in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood.
