Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony, first performed in 1902, is a mighty piece of music, with six movements and a performance time of more than an hour and a half. In fact, it’s the longest regularly performed symphony.
So you won’t find any opening pieces on the program when the Cleveland Orchestra tackles the work this weekend with 28-year-old Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä, soon to be leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, back on the podium.
Not only is the symphony long, but it requires a lot of musical firepower. The orchestra will be joined for the performance by the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus and mezzo-soprano soloist Jennifer Johnson.
