When CityMusic Cleveland returns for its 2024-25 season, it’ll be offering a program of the three B’s: Bach, Brahms and … Brouwer? Even if you’re not a classical music fan, you undoubtedly recognize the first two names. As for the third — Margaret Brouwer, she’s a noted Cleveland-based contemporary composer whose works have won many awards and been performed all over the world. She’s also the retired head of the composition department at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Brouwer’s Viola Concerto will be sandwiched in the program between J.S. Bach’s Branderburg Concerto No. 6 and Johannes Brahms Serenade No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 16. And it will feature Cleveland Orchestra violist Eliesha Nelson, an Alaska native, originally a violinist, who joined the orchestra’s viola section in 2000, and who also designs and sews the beautiful dresses she wears onstage at Severance Music Center.

Leading the program will be guest conductor Lorenzo Lopez, a young musician who is also assistant conductor of the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra.

The program will be performed at Fairmount Presbyterian Church on Thursday October 24; at St. Noel Catholic Church in Willoughby Hills on Friday October 25; at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village on Saturday October 26; and at Our Lady of Angels in Rocky River on Sunday October 27. As always, CityMusic Cleveland programs are free and open to all.
