Beck Center’s First Book Read Features Discussion Around Book About Refugees

Mon 10/28 @ 7-8:30PM

With the demagoguing of immigration, mostly by those on the right, during the current election, it’s never been more important for people to educate themselves on those coming into this country whether as immigrants or refugees from untenable situations in their own countries (such as the LEGAL Haitian refugees in Springfield, Ohio).

The Beck Center is debuting a new program called the Beck Book Read. The first book they’ll address is Refugee by Alan Grantz, which tells the stories of three different refugees in different times periods and the horrible circumstances under which they fled their countries. Darren T. Hamm, Senior Director of Field Offices for the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, will lead a discussion of the experiences of refugees who have come to Cleveland.

It’s suggested that participants should have read or at least skimmed the book, which can be picked up for free at the Madison Branch of the Lakewood Public Library, while supplies last. They can also be checked out at both the Madison Branch and the Main Library on Detroit.
