Artist Blurs Boundaries Between Abstract and Figurative at Abattoir Gallery

Through 12/15

Recently, Abattoir Gallery in the Hildebrandt Building opened its second show of work by painters Shawn Powell called Triangle, Circle, Square. As the name suggests, the show is based on the geometry of those three figures, challenging, the artist says, the standard reading of a canvas as a rectangle.

Zooming in mundane objects such as pencils and cigarettes, he imbues the objects with multiple meanings that reward closer viewing. The show, we’re told, “continues Powell’s exploration of previous themes that question the artifice of painting—abstraction, representation, the subject as decoy. He invites close analysis and the pleasure of simple looking simultaneously, layering art historical references onto uninflected close-ups that shift legible forms into the abstract.”

Gallery hours are noon-5pm Fridays and Saturdays.
