Three Outstanding Local Women Musicians Perform as “Sisters in Song” at Music Box

Thu 9/26 7:30PM

It used to be rare to see women onstage performing in bands around Cleveland — a lounge singer here, an acoustic folk singer with illusions of being the next Joan Baez there — but rarely rocking out. That’s all changed now, with an army of young women in bands.

But it’s good to remember the talented artists who broke ground, some of them still performed, such as bi-voiced Becky Boyd, who puts a distinctive spin on both originals and pop and soul standards — she’s been performing since the 70s. And she regularly gets together with two other accomplished area vocalists — guitarist Kristine Jackson, and keyboard player Rachel Brown, frontwoman of Rachel & the Beatnik Cowboys — as Sisters in Song to share their decades of musical experience. Jackson’s and Boyd’s style lean bluesy, while Brown includes a sort of torchy country vibe a la Patsy Cline. All three are accomplished songwriters as well as outstanding performers/

When they get together, be prepared for some great music and a good time. Their rapport contributes to the appeal of their show as they tell stories, joke around and contribute to each other’s music. They’re back at the Music Box Supper Club this week. Go here for tickets and dinner reservations.
