Dr. Joan Lededer is a retired community psychiatrist with a passion for photography — and for people’s stories. Last year’s Cleveland Photo Fest featured series of photos she took after spending time with a Congolese refugee family working to adjust to life in Cleveland. Recently, she has been spending time at a Old Angle Boxing Gym in the basement of the 150-year-old Trinity Lutheran Church on the near west side, run by former Golden Gloves boxer Jimmy Bivens, observing the interactions between the trainers, coaches and boxers, and capturing them in intimate images.
The church, however, needs extensive renovations, so Lederer and church president Laura Simko have organized a benefit for both the church and the boxing gym, taking place Saturday September 28 from 11am-4pm at the church. It will feature organ concerts, dance music, tours of the church and boxing gym (where you can see some of its athletes spar), food and raffle baskets.
